Tax Collector / Deputy Treasurer

Performs the statutory duties of the municipal Tax Collector under the Municipal Act and other Acts of the legislature; Prepares taxation working papers and various taxation schedules leading to the production of the annual municipal statements on a timely basis and works with the Municipal Auditor during the annual audit. Calculates annual tax rates for adoption by Council; Coordinates tax billings; Performs tax adjustments and investigates issues and takes corrective action; Balances tax rolls and prepares a variety of reports for senior staff and Council regarding tax collection, rate bylaws, etc.; Collects tax arrears; Responds to property owner enquiries regarding property tax status in person, by telephone or by mail; Attends Council and Committee meetings as required; Balances the tax ledger to the general ledger; Processes change of ownership notices, address changes, maintains the Master File and forwards changes to the Regional Assessment Office; Processes financial institution requests for tax notices; Signs tax certificates; Assists with the calculation of utility billings and the posting of utility receipts; Balances cash deposits from taxes, utilities and miscellaneous; Performs the duties of the Treasurer in the absence of the Treasurer.
